Yakutania Point and Smuggler's Cove

You asked for it; now I'm going to overwhelm you with poorly taken pictures of pretty places. :) This little trail is the flattest, and most travelled one in town. A nice loop across a small foot bridge over the Skagway River... Yakutania Point is a group of rocks that extends out into the bay (makes for some really beautiful ocean views for those of us who aren't coming in by cruiseship). Then the trail turns and drops in elevation, until you reach a really beautiful beach called "Smuggler's Cove," I guess you can infer the areas history, although I haven't researched it yet.

I apologize in advance for repeats and disorganization. I bought 2 hours to "blog" so I'm just trying to get everything up!

These things are massive - literally floating cities. I've asked visitors if I can follow them on so I get to cruise around Alaska and eat from the buffet (apparently it's pretty good). Just noticed this; that black that looks like it could be some sort of bridge to the ship is part of the ore dock (no relation to the cruise ship behind it). Interesting fact - one of the other rangers here mentioned that there's one ship that comes every year, and it holds so many people that while it's docked it's considered the third largest city in Alaska.

Other interesting fact! The Princess Sophia was a passenger liner that sank in 1918 in Lynn Canal (it left from Skagway and was near Juneau when it sank). 353 people died despite rescue efforts; it was a major blow to the population of Alaska and the Yukon, where it was already in decline after the gold rush subsided.
Chilkat Mountain Range in the background there :)
Sometimes I feel like screaming "GET BACK ON YOUR SHIPS AND LEAVE US ALONE!" You'd understand if you worked in a visitors' center here.
But then again sometimes I also want to scream "TAKE ME WITH YOU!"

Footbridge towards Yakutania...

THE BEACH! I miss it...

If you're willing to give up a limb or maybe your first born child, you can take a helicopter ride over the nearby glaciers nearby.
I am proud of this picture! Look at that timing! (I flew on one of those here into Skagway)

If you feel like getting a work out in while you're sight-seeing...
